LETTER: Trust in CP forfeited with misrepresentation of SA

Letter to the editor:

I recognize you are highly regarded as a reputable, well-founded paper on campus. However, I wanted to note that in your most recent issue, the article concerning the Student Association was replete with misquotations and errors. This was not the first time I was interviewed and misquoted. Fabrication is akin to lying, something prominent yellow journalists resorted to before the Canons of Journalism were introduced, and they were implemented for a reason.

The article, "SA Office ‘second home' for presidents, senators," went astray in mentioning things factually unrelated to students and the Student Association's mission to work on the behalf of the students, such as mailboxes, and, more astonishingly amusing, the candy dish. The article misquoted me two times, reading "Berry wishes there was more in the fridge — aside from the mustard and Activia that currently reside there ... ‘I'd like more drinks — well, legal drinks — in the fridge,' she said." The assumption that illegal drinks are permitted in the office, albeit the fact I am underage, is offensive, as well as robustly inaccurate. The other misquotation concerns couches, a much less pertinent issue concerning the college.

We hold ourselves to a high regard in terms of our reputation, just as you do for your organization, so you must understand how I feel about the illegitimacy of this article. As I embark further into my role as vice president for organizations of the SA, I expect that the student body is of the conviction that I am a totally approachable person and endeavor to work hard for the betterment of the student population.

You should understand that this is not only a reflection on me and how I look but also on the Student Association and the office as a whole. You, Cardinal Points, pride yourselves on being politically and factually correct, while still holding the interest of readers and audience alike. However, you have forfeited my trust in this paper because this wasn't the first time it has happened.

Hopefully, by my pointing this out you will be able to rectify this error. I look forward to hearing from you, as I hope to expedite matters to move on and continue to better serve the constituency.

Sincerely,

Kyla Berry

Flannel, the Student Association does have some major say on campus. Over the past few years, there could have been many negative changes to this campus if it wasn't for the leadership of the Student Association. The Student Association has had many discussions with the College Administration to ensure that students are better represented on this campus. This is an ongoing struggle that the Student Association will continue to have for years to come.

Nobody wants to read about SA "issues" because they're boring as shit. The SA is a cardboard prop to give students the illusion they have some democratic control over their education experience. In reality, the SA has next to zero authority. SA members will say otherwise only because it serves their masturbatory fantasies of serving in real political office.

In regards to the comment by flannel, the individuals who run for the Student Association offices are not "obnoxious dudley do-rights," they are people who want to make a positive difference on this campus and stand up for the student body. I have served in a variety of positions in the Student Association, and I do not feel that your view is correct. Student Association representatives are trying to ensure that the Student Body's voice is heard on campus. Without the Student Association, many things on campus would be different, as the students would not be represented at all in campus decisions. After reading this article, the comments made by CP were inappropriate and not needed. They did write about any useful thing at all, as there are many things that could be written about in this article. They could have mentioned how many discussions about issues go on in the SA office, how people put in many hours per week to represent the Student Body, without any kind of pay. These individuals who seek office, are volunteering their time and service for the students of SUNY Plattsburgh.

This doesn't even make sense. According to your own quotation of the article the writer was not suggesting there were alcoholic beverages in the refrigerator. Maybe you should learn your way around the English language before you decide to run for office. And on that note: who runs for SA, anyway? A bunch of obnoxious dudley do-rights, that's who.
