Letter to the editor:
I recognize you are highly regarded as a reputable, well-founded paper on campus. However, I wanted to note that in your most recent issue, the article concerning the Student Association was replete with misquotations and errors. This was not the first time I was interviewed and misquoted. Fabrication is akin to lying, something prominent yellow journalists resorted to before the Canons of Journalism were introduced, and they were implemented for a reason.
The article, "SA Office ‘second home' for presidents, senators," went astray in mentioning things factually unrelated to students and the Student Association's mission to work on the behalf of the students, such as mailboxes, and, more astonishingly amusing, the candy dish. The article misquoted me two times, reading "Berry wishes there was more in the fridge — aside from the mustard and Activia that currently reside there ... ‘I'd like more drinks — well, legal drinks — in the fridge,' she said." The assumption that illegal drinks are permitted in the office, albeit the fact I am underage, is offensive, as well as robustly inaccurate. The other misquotation concerns couches, a much less pertinent issue concerning the college.
We hold ourselves to a high regard in terms of our reputation, just as you do for your organization, so you must understand how I feel about the illegitimacy of this article. As I embark further into my role as vice president for organizations of the SA, I expect that the student body is of the conviction that I am a totally approachable person and endeavor to work hard for the betterment of the student population.
You should understand that this is not only a reflection on me and how I look but also on the Student Association and the office as a whole. You, Cardinal Points, pride yourselves on being politically and factually correct, while still holding the interest of readers and audience alike. However, you have forfeited my trust in this paper because this wasn't the first time it has happened.
Hopefully, by my pointing this out you will be able to rectify this error. I look forward to hearing from you, as I hope to expedite matters to move on and continue to better serve the constituency.
Sincerely,
Kyla Berry
