  • Picket signs don’t change problems

    If standing up for something you believe in with a group of people changed things, the world would be too much of a pushover. It takes much more effort than yelling out what you think is right to persuade the law or opposing side.

    Ask my 7-year-old self who her hero is, and she would say soccer star Brandi Chas­tain. My 14-year-old self would answer similarly. I still admire Chastain’s athleti­cism, dedication to health advocacy and ad­vancing female sports, but my answer has changed. Today my hero is my mom.

    We were shocked to read the May 3 editorial titled “Empty accusations soil reputation.” Though we trust that your intention was not to hurt survivors of rape and sexual assault, your poor choice of words, especially in the headline, added insult to injury for many of us.
