The structure of the SUNY University Police system could be centralized and save New York State as much as $3.9 million, James McCartney, president of the New York state University Police Officer's Union, said at a recent SUNY Board of Trustees hearing.

Forget about centralization, let's talk about competance
troubles in sunyland
Here is the bottom line.....SUNY campuses do not wish to centralize their departments because they want to keep absolute power in the hands of the college Preident, who is not a law enforcement official and is not trained to deal with such issues. By centralizing the University Police as one agency, millions of dollars could be saved by eliminating wasted salaries on useless management. But no, SUNY would rather threaten to lay off adjuncts and support staff, who truely are essential to the operations of the campus just like the Police Officers are. Nowhere have I ever seen anything that convinced me that having a chief and assistant chief at Plattsburgh State is a necessity. Check out their salaries on seethroughnewyork.net to see what I mean. Two inflated salaries for nothing. It is very sad.

Actually Nocop, Mr. McCartney has many valid points that have been ignored by SUNY for many years. The officers union is trying to enlighten those with the power to make changes with ideas that may be able to help stave off more monetary problems in State government. If the college presidents would concede that they are not the law enforcement experts that they think they are and turn the responsibility over to a Commissioner/Superintendant, they would be providing better service to their community and likely not have to write such a big check for University Police each year.

You really need to consider McCartney's position as the leader of a union. His natural inclination is to reduce the number of managerial employees and it appears his personal inclination is to eliminate all managerial employees. This guys testimony is nothing more than sour grapes. His agenda is political not practical and his penchant for self agrandizement is remarkable.
