Two cases of mumps have been identified on the Plattsburgh State campus, with lab results of a third case pending, according to a Monday afternoon e-mail from Director for the Center of Student Health and Psychological Services Kathleen Camelo.
According to the e-mail the third case would result in an “outbreak” of a disease, based on standards of the New York State Health Department.
Students who have not had two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine will be excluded from the campus, including dorms, classes and extracurricular campus activities, should an outbreak occur, according to the e-mail. Exclusion for mumps will be 26 days after the last case has been identified.
The Clinton County Health Department and the Center for Student Health & Psychological Services at PSUC will be administering the vaccine free of charge to those who need a first or second dose Tuesday, March 9, in the health center from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Those who receive a first dose of the vaccine, according to the e-mail, will be allowed to attend class based on Public Health Law guidelines. Students with medical exemptions from the vaccine should contact the health center for further information.
Staff members are encouraged to review immunization histories and seek an MMR dose if not up to date, the e-mail said.
Common symptoms of mumps, which can be spread by respiratory droplets, include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite followed by swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears, according to the e-mail. For more information contact the health center at 564-2187.
