The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team came out strong in the second half of the 2008 Cardinal Classic championship game, but didn't have enough to come back from their 39-19 halftime deficit, losing the game, 64-47.
The Lady Cardinals closed the gap to 41-30 with the help of an 11-2 run, but three consecutive defensive fouls put their opponents, Trinity, back up by 16 points and helped them maintain their first half lead.
"(How) we played in the second half, that's how we need to play for 40 minutes," Head Coach Cheryl Cole said. "That group that came out in the second half really got it going. We got much more aggressive with our offense. We were attacking the basket better, and unfortunately we dug ourselves too big of a hole in the first half."
Cole said she felt that the team wasn't aggressive enough and that's something that needs to be improved on heading into the next game. The Lady Cardinals only reached the foul line five times throughout the entire game. Trinity reached the foul line 18 times.
The Lady Cardinals allowed the tournament's MVP, Trinity forward Christine Card, to get a double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds.
"We just did not have an answer for her," Cole said.
Freshman guard Erin Silberberg led PSUC in scoring with 19 points, shooting just over 50 percent as she was 8-for-15. Senior forward Vanessa Arthurton led the team in rebounds with 13.
The 1-2 Lady Cardinals will host Clarkson at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Clarkson was victorious in the teams' match-up last season, winning, 54-43.
