Many of us have read in the papers, including our very own Cardinal Points, and were drawn to the story that the State University of New York approved a rational tuition initiative. SUNY has been debating on increasing tuition due to the economic crisis our country and especially New York is facing currently, it left students and faculty alike wondering how much and in what form it would come in. We got our answer Tuesday with SUNY moving to a rational fee tuition model. An interesting fact is that your Student Association initiated a similar rational model with our SA fee two years ago. The Student Association under the leadership of President Michael Cashman and other members of the 44th Legislation moved the SA fee to be rationalized. The SA fee was set at a certain price and the fee has gradually grown every year based off the Higher Education Index. This was a great initiative, now the fee will not radically increase without warning as in the past; rather it will gradually increase and will meet the student needs much better. The ultimate goal was for our student government to be a role model for other SUNY Plattsburgh fee's and hopefully someday SUNY tuition as we have finally seen in the past few days. YOUR student government looked into the future and felt this was the best and most fair option for our student. We are always looking for student input and idea like this one; stop in to our Angell College Center 2nd Floor office. And remember to vote on December 2nd at evote.plattbsurgh.edu, vote for the candidates you feel best represents your interest and have the foresight to make change like the rational fee initiative.
