The storage building located behind Champlain Valley Hall, once the Champlain Valley Hospital and then the Faculty Office Building, lay in a heap of ruins as the college tears it down to create new parking spaces.
"The building is being torn down because of the deterioration of the mechanical systems and the inability to reuse the space effectively," said Kevin Roberts, interim director of facilities.
Chris Jackson, financial manager of facilities, maintenance and operations, said, "It became a liability," explaining that the building was so far out of health and safety code that it wasn't even equipped with proper fire alarms or sprinkler systems.
The contract for demolishing the building is due to end Dec. 15, but "the building should be a pile of ruble by the end of the week," Jackson said.
To replace the lost space, a building designed specifically for storage has been built behind Hudson Hall. Unlike the old Champlain Valley Hospital building, the new storage building will not have pipes and therefore not be heated.
"Because there were pipes in the (old) building, we had to keep it heated," Jackson said, explaining that it was a waste of both money and space.
The site of the storage building will become an additional 25 parking spots, which Jackson hopes will help alleviate the 60 parking spaces that will be lost after a new edition is built onto Hudson Hall.
Whether the additional spaces will be for faculty or students has yet to be decided.
"At this time, the usage of the lot has not been designated," Roberts said.
