The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team defeated Oneonta, 2-1, in a double overtime thriller Saturday in one of its biggest match-ups of the season.

The Lady Cardinals, who came off a shocking loss at New Paltz Friday, ended the Red Dragons' 62-game home winning streak. The Red Dragons are the No. 1 team in the SUNYAC.

Despite being out shot 17-3, PSUC improved its conference record to 5-2-0 and 11-2-1 overall.

Oneonta, the preseason No. 1-ranked SUNYAC team dropped its first conference game of the year and now stands at 6-1-0 and 9-4-1 overall. PSUC is the only conference opponent to beat the Red Dragons in the last 10 years of SUNYAC play.

Helen Giroux, the leading scorer in the conference with 12 goals, netted her third game winning goal of the season 25 seconds into the second overtime period. It was only the Lady Cardinals third shot of the game.

The first goal of the game came from PSUC, as Emily Riley found the back of the net for the third time this season. The goal was unassisted as Riley stole the ball from the Oneonta defense.

Caitlin Burke, Oneonta's third best point-getter, scored in the second half to tie the game at one.

The reigning SUNYAC player of the week, Oneonta's Christine Marra, was held to zero shots on goal for the first time in five games by the Lady Cards' defense.

PSUC will return home this Friday at 3 p.m. to take on Fredonia.
