Most people would describe women's soccer defenseman Lindsay Gilbert as humble and quiet.

But her quiet personality changes as soon as she gets onto the field, and she is known for her leadership, athleticism and great defense.

"You don't see the confidence off the field as when she's on the field," Head Coach Karen Waterbury said.

During her senior year at Shenendehowa Central School, Gilbert helped lead her varsity team to victory in the state championship in 2004. She considers this is quite an accomplishment and a great way to end her high school career.

Now she hopes to do the same for Plattsburgh State.

While growing up in Clifton Park, Gilbert started playing soccer and stayed with the defense. She continued her enthusiasm and played defense for both the junior varsity and varsity team at Shenendehowa.

She also played club soccer for Premier until her senior year when she played for Blackwatch. While playing club soccer, she had the opportunity to play tournaments in Florida, Virginia and other states.

Gilbert chose PSUC because of soccer and the closeness to home and her mother, Marcella Seale.

"I go to all the home games, and try to get to the rest," Seale said.

Waterbury has started Gilbert since coming in as a freshman. She liked Gilbert's athleticism and size and always wanted her on the field.

Since her first year at PSUC, Gilbert has been a part of a team that has improved in each of her four years here. "My freshman year we did all right," she said. "We did better each year after that."

During her sophomore year, the soccer team lost in the semifinals of the SUNYAC championship. Last year they made it to the finals, and she was named to the all-SUNYAC first team.

This year, she is taking it one game at a time and does not want to get ahead of herself.

"We've got a good idea of where we're going," she said.

She has helped the Lady Cards to a 10-1-1 (4-1 SUNYAC) record so far, which has included eight shutouts.
