Gilbert does not get opportunities to score points while playing defense. This year she scored her first goal - a penalty kick at the end of the game to help her team win.
She has just one goal this season, but statistics do not matter to Gilbert. To her, it is about her role in the defense, and that shows through the shutouts and their record.
"Teams don't want to go through the middle of us," Waterbury said. "She is tough as nails and wins battles in the air every time."
Nicole Clark played alongside Gilbert in high school, and did the same at college. Clark felt comfortable with Gilbert beside her.
"On the field she is a very strong player, very competitive," Clark said. "Off the field she is very supportive and prepares herself very well."
In a recent game against Cortland, Waterbury said Gilbert did not play well.
"In all four years she had one bad game," Waterbury said. "I still didn't take her off the field."
During her junior year in high school, Gilbert broke her right foot, but it did not keep her from quitting.
"She is one to roll over, get up and keep going," Seale said.
During her sophomore year at college, Gilbert broke her left foot. This left her sidelined for a few weeks, but she returned before a full recovery.
She struggled through the injury for the team and the coach could not take her out of the games because Gilbert wanted to stay.
"Not once did she ever complain," Waterbury said. "You could see the pain in her face."
The team will be losing one of their established veterans after this season, as Gilbert is a senior.
Waterbury knows they can fill her shoes, but not with the same stature Gilbert has.
"She is the toughest kid I ever coached," Waterbury said. "She will run right over other players.
While each year the Lady Cards do better, Gilbert is at her last step. She wonders if she can do what she did in high school, and leave with a championship.
"We can do it," she said. "If we keep everything together so it doesn't get crazy, we will accomplish a lot."
