Since Sept. 13, Danny Faiella hadn't recorded a point for the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team.

A crossing shot from teammate Ryan Ormsby that rang off the crossbar and landed at Faiella's feet helped change that. Faiella netted the ball for what stood as the game-winning goal as PSUC defeated Oneonta Saturday, 2-1.

It was Faiella's second goal, bringing his season point total to seven.

"The past couple of games I haven't been shooting at all, so I finally got my chance to shoot and got the ball in the net," Faiella said. "It was a big momentum builder for the team. This 2-0 weekend really helped us out."

Oneonta (8-4-1, 4-3-1 SUNYAC) got on the board first, as Matt Lindemann headed in a free kick by Nicholas Lange at 14:48. It was Lindemann's second goal of the year.

With five minutes left in the first half, PSUC pressured and had a near goal that was stopped by a hand ball. The play caused a PSUC penalty kick, executed successfully by David Hickman. The game was tied, 1-1, at the half despite PSUC out-shooting the Red Dragons, 6-1.

Faiella's game-winner was scored with 19 minutes left in the game. The Cards were able to fend off the Red Dragons, maintaining possession and doing a good job of killing the clock, Head Coach Chris Waterbury said. The Cards kept the ball in the offensive zone deep in the corner for nearly all of the final four minutes of the game.

"One of our problems has been with our forwards. We never got the same game from each person," Waterbury said. "Ryan and Danny really raised the level when they came on the field. The naked eye is not going to tell if that's a starter or a reserve player. The team needed that because it told us we were deeper now, too."

The Cards (11-3-1, 4-2-1 SUNYAC) jumped into a tie for second with Cortland in the conference following two victories this weekend. They were in seventh place and out of the playoff picture before yesterday's victory over New Paltz.

Oneonta now holds the sixth and final playoff position with three conference games remaining.

The Cards' next game is against Fredonia. Last season, the Blue Devils defeated the Cards in penalty kicks, 4-2, in the SUNYAC championship game to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

"The guys got together (after today's game) and said let's be happy, but let's stay grounded," Waterbury said. "There's only one game that matters and that's the next one."
