For the 23rd time in its history, the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team defeated New Paltz under Head Coach Chris Waterbury. The Cards defeated the Hawks for their first win in two weeks, 3-0, to improve their SUNYAC record.
Pat Shaughnessy raised his team-leading point total to 25, netting two goals to give him 12 on the season. Josh Cookfair figured in the scoring with two assists while defenseman Noel Tipovski netted just his second goal of the seaosn.
The Cards (10-3-1, 3-2-1 SUNYAC) and Hawks (4-7-2, 1-5-0 SUNYAC) played the majority of the first half in the neutral zone. New Paltz had two quality scoring chances that never reached the net.
After bringing the goalie down, PSUC forward Danny Faiella appeared to have an open net, but the New Paltz defense swarmed and prevented a shot from being taken. The game was tied at zeros at halftime.
The Hawks' 4-5-1 formation threw the Cards off, Waterbury said.
"We were whacking everything long. They took us by surprise because we were expecting a different formation," he said. "We couldn't do a lot of things because we kept losing the midfield."
Ten minutes into the first half, Shaughnessy struck. An initial shot attempt was stopped by Hawks goalie Patrick Carlucci, but the resulting rebound came right back to Shaughnessy who sent it to the back of the net.
It was Shaughnessy's first goal since Sept. 26 against Geneseo.
"It raised my confidence a lot," Shaughnessy said of the goals. "More importantly it's about the win. We've been in that drought, a tie with Corltand and a loss to Oswego. We were just frustrated. It's must win here on out."
The Cards face Oneonta tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Fieldhouse. The Red Dragons are in just their second season in the SUNYAC after transferring from Division I to Division III. They defeated the Cards, 1-0, last season.
"We've got to repair the bodies get the nutrition back in our system," Waterbury said. "If the guys cant get up for Oneonta, there's nothing I can say."
