Between the health benefits and environmental advantages, Plattsburgh State students are finding more and more reasons to bike instead of drive.
PSUC students use their bikes on campus for several reasons, including transportation, convenience and just plain fun.
PSUC student Ryan Yendo said he rides his bike everyday.
"It saves on gas and there's not a lot of parking on campus for off-campus students," he said.
Yendo, who was spending $80 a week to fill up his tank over the summer, said he now puts gas in his car every three weeks.
Other students, like senior Colin Brady, do it for the exhilaration. He has long been an active biker, and said he enjoys biking in the woods and on dirt trails.
Brady said he bikes four times a week and that "it helps me stay in shape."
Jerimy Blowers, director of health education services, said bicycling has many health benefits.
"The physical stress on the body improves muscle development while the cardio aspect helps to burn fat," he said.
He added that "performing moderate exercise is shown to boost mood and is an effective activity for helping to control low-to moderate depression."
Josh Berkowitz said he rides his bike because of the convenience. He said he can get from Macdonough Hall to the ACC faster on a bike than he would walking or driving.
"It really does make life much more simple on a small campus, especially when you have to jump from place to place where walking would've taken much more time," Berkowitz said.
When it comes to biking, Blowers added that not overdoing it is the best thing. "Many people think that more is better, which is not always true," he said.
Twenty to 30 minutes of cardio activity each day is enough.
"Marathon cardio workouts, which are over an hour on the treadmill for example, are often unnecessary and inefficient for the target of losing weight or burning fat," Blowers said.
