Within the past week, Rebecca Kasper, director of the Center for Teaching Excellence, has delivered and mailed over 215 voter registration forms for Plattsburgh State students.
Kasper, who covered the mailing costs with her own money, said she has always encouraged students to vote, and has always been discouraged by the low number of young voters. The overall cost for the postage stamps has been about $25 so far, and Kasper said it is very much worth it.
"I decided this year that I was going to do whatever I could so they (students) would have their voice and exercise their rights," she said.
When a form comes in that is not directed to Clinton County she puts a stamp on it and mails it out. For those registered within the county, Kasper has hand-delivered each form to Board of Elections office.
As a member of the City Democratics, as well as the County Democratics, Kasper represents ward 1 district 5 in the city of Plattsburgh. However, in terms of registration forms, Kasper said she has been completely non-partisan.
"I just want students to vote," she said. "I do no inquiries."
Kasper said on Election Day she will be in Amite Plaza with a voter registration list for PSUC students. The school will provide transportation to the polls, and Kasper will direct each student to where they need to vote and how to get there.
Today is the deadline for voter registration forms, and Kasper said she will be making her last delivery at about 3:30 this afternoon. Students can pick up registration forms at the front desk of the Angell College Center.
"I don't care if it needs to be mailed, I will mail it for them," Kasper said. "I do encourage students to register here because it's a lot surer and easier for them."
The deadline for absentee ballot applications is Oct. 28.
