There are an approximate total of 1,843 off-campus, on-campus and faculty/staff parking spaces on the Plattsburgh State campus, not counting spots at the Fieldhouse. We at Cardinal Points know because we counted them - every one of them.
Last semester there were a total of 2,444, according to the University Police's official count.
But despite the loss of spaces on the PSUC campus and an increased enrollment, fewer parking tickets have been issued this semester compared to last.
Walter Hallett, the University Police office manager at PSUC, said there have been only 1,059 tickets issued this semester compared to the approximate 2,000 issued at this time last semester. Hallett said the University Police have been a little more lax about issuing tickets because of the changes on campus.
In fact, he said the staff was not giving out tickets at the beginning of the semester.
"We wanted to give them a little time to figure out where they could and could not park," he said.
But Hallett said the University Police have been ticketing those who have parked on the grass and other obvious infractions.
Arlene Sabo, the chief of University Police, said the parking on campus is really a non-issue.
"We have to asses if there's really a problem. And the answer is no because there are spaces behind Sibley Hall," she said. "The parking shuttle is there in hopes that people will use it to lessen the inconvenience to them. It's completely free."
She went on to say that there is really no way to add anymore spaces.
"Unless we want a completely paved campus with no green (space)," she said, "there's no way to provide more parking."
