With the top seeded Plattsburgh State softball team three outs away from a first game upset in the SUNYAC tournament, the Lady Cardinals were bailed out by one of their best hitters.
The sixth seeded Golden Eagles had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth, and heading into the bottom of the seventh, pitcher Michelle Jackson had to face the heart of the Lady Cardinals lineup.
Senior shortstop Kirby Davids drew a walk, bringing PSUC's top hitter, sophomore second baseman Amy Woo, to the plate. Woo launched a 2-2 offering to the left field scoreboard, pulling the Lady Cardinals from the brink of upset with a two run, walkoff home run.
It wasn't the most cleanly played game, but PSUC moves on 1-0 in the tournament, and will face off against third seed Buffalo State 9 a.m. today at Cardinal Park. The Bengals were upset by fourth seed Brockport, 4-0.
The Lady Cardinals (30-11) pushed their consecutive game win streak to seventeen and are still unbeaten at Cardinal Park this year.
Oswego broke the zeros on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Erin Tracy doubled to open the inning and Stephanie Zweig intentionally walked the Golden Eagles best hitter, Sarah Castaldo. A bunt advanced the runners, and Zweig intentionally walked Jillian Burns to load the bases. After the next batter popped out to Zweig, Melissa Ryan bunted down the third base line.
PSUC third baseman Erin Jamieson scooped up the ball and had time to throw home but hesitated. No one was covering first in time, and her throw to the bag was late. Oswego took a 1-0 lead, but that was all they could muster in the inning.
Stephanie Zweig pitched through a few defensive gaffes and picked up the win, throwing a complete game and allowing only one run. She fanned nine and walked four, although three of them were intentional.
The Lady Cardinals have a chance to eliminate Buffalo State (25-14) for the second year in a row in tournament play. And just like last year, the Bengals will have to face starter Zweig, who blanketed them over 4.2 innings last year, striking out six.
