With a sweep of SUNYAC foe Geneseo Monday morning, the Plattsburgh State softball team captured a share of the regular season SUNYAC title for the second time in three years and home-field advantage for the tournament.

Because the Lady Cardinals and Cortland finished with identical SUNYAC records (19-3), a tie-breaker was needed to determine who is to host the tournament. The tie-break was which team had the better record against Buffalo State, the third place team. The Lady Cards' 2-0 was better than Cortland's 1-1, so the games will be in Cardinal Park at the Fieldhouse. Cortland still received a share of the regular season title.

In order to host, the Lady Cards needed both wins Monday, which they got.

The Lady Cardinals (29-11 overall, 19-3 SUNYAC) downed Geneseo (13-9 overall, 10-12 SUNAYC) 8-0 (6 innings) in the opener, and then 9-1 in a five-inning second game.

In the first game, the Lady Cardinals jumped out to a quick start, scoring four runs in the first frame. They would follow that up with one more in each of the next two innings.

Senior catcher Tiffany Burek and freshman outfielder Corrine Gioia led the Lady Cards' offense with two hits apiece. Seven other batters recorded a hit for the Lady Cards, for a game total of 11.

Senior Stephanie Zweig pitched six scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and a walk, while striking out eight, upping her record to 15-4.

In the second game, freshman designated hitter Nicole Diemer led a balanced 10-hit attack with three hits and two runs. Six other Lady Cardinals also recorded a hit, with senior shortstop Kirby Davids getting two.

Senior Jaclyn Leitze pitched five innings, allowing one run on five hits, while striking out eight, as she picked up the win, improving her record to 14-7.

The Lady Cardinals won all 10 of their home games this season, which may prove beneficial.

"We've been one of the toughest places in the country to play," Head Coach Sean Cotter said.

In the last four years, the Lady Cards have won 84 percent of the games played on their home field. They are 4-0 in playoff games at home during that span.

The Lady Cardinals continue their hunt for a SUNYAC title when the tournament comes to town May 1. The tournament is scheduled to run through May 3.
