The Cardinal baseball team bounced back from its two losses Thursday in dominating fashion, outscoring St. Michael's College 24-6 and sweeping its doubleheader on Friday. The two wins improved PSUC's overall record to 14-18.
The Cardinals scored a total of 15 runs in the first three innings of game one, bailing out freshman starter Dan Noonan from a poor outing and putting the game out of reach early, winning 18-6. Noonan allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in less than two innings of work.
"Being a freshman, and with the amount of starts he's had, this is a different kind of workload than Dan's used to," Assistant Coach Mike Bergman said. "He's kind of running on fumes right now."
Bergman added that because of the amount that Noonan has been asked to pitch this season, the team will try to rest him for the remainder of the regular season, saving his arm for the SUNYAC tournament.
Relievers Joey Painter and Mike Terracciano held the Knights to only five hits after Noonan left the game, and the two combined to strike out four in their five innings of work.
Runs support was not an issue in game two, as the Cards newest edition to left field, Kevin Gent, took the mound and shut down the Knights, throwing a complete game shut-out. Gent allowed only five hits, struck out three, and did not surrender a walk in his 83- pitch, 6-0 victory.
"The game was vintage Kevin Gent," Bergman said. "He kept the ball down, threw strikes, and made the game a lot more fun for everyone around him."
Junior Joe Curcio led the Cardinals offensively on the day, tallying four hits and three RBIs. Senior Brandon Humphrey added three hits and three RBIs as well.
The Cardinals will celebrate Senior Day at Chip Cummings Field Saturday, as seven seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony before the team's game against Lyndon State at 1pm. Watch for senior co-captain Zack Welch to play all nine positions tomorrow, starting at catcher. Pre-game ceremonies will start around 12:15 p.m.
