The winter season is finally coming to a close as the spring sports teams begin to prepare for their season openers. The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team is one of those teams getting psyched for the new season.
"This is my last year on the team and I'm really excited with what we have," senior attack/midfielder Andrew Webster said. "We have a lot to prove and we have a lot of potential."
The Cardinals went an overall 9-6 last season and 2-4 in the SUNYAC, placing them fifth, but are looking to change that this season.
"We're all working hard to improve our 9-6 record last season," junior midfielder Matt Maes said. "We only lost a few seniors and we're really starting to get comfortable."
Some key returning players include senior attack Frank Sangiovanni, who lead the team with 48 goals last season and lead the entire SUNYAC with 3.20 goals per game.
Sophomore attack Kyle Norchi is another strong returning player. Norchi lead the team with 61 points including 38 goals and placed third in points per game in the SUNYAC with 2.53 per game.
The Cards are really looking to improve the season they had last year and know they have to play harder this season, especially with a schedule that is going to be much more difficult.
"We added a lot of new teams and a lot of competitive teams to our schedule," junior James Tenny said. "We have a lot of the top 25 teams in Division III lacrosse in the country."
The Cardinals will face top seeded teams such as Western Connecticut, Fontbonne and Montclair State in non-conference games.
"As long as we play with our potential as a team, we can play pretty well against anybody," Webster said. "We just have to start strong and finish strong."
Senior goalie Billy Hughes has also been one of the top contributors to the Cardinals for the past three years.
Hughes has been the starting goaltender for the Cards since he was a freshman and said he is looking forward to the new season.
