Although the year has changed, the Plattsburgh State Cardinal men and women indoor track and field teams' goals still remain the same.

Keep improving.

They will have a chance to show their improvement at tomorrow's SUNYAC Championships at Hobart/William Smith in Geneva, N.Y.

"If we can make improvements on last year's finishes at this meet I will be happy for the kids because we lost a lot of point scorers due to graduation," Head Coach John Lynch said.

Last year the men and women finished sixth.

Lynch has geared the Cardinals' goals to outdoor rather than indoor.

"I am using indoor as a stepping stone for us this year," Lynch said.

There are individual goals amongst the athletes to compete late into the indoor season.

"As a team, I think we are hoping to have a few more people qualify for ECACs," senior Alyssa Recny said of the Cardinal women, who have.

The Cardinal women have had big surprises this winter and look for big performances.

Junior Lisa Perez has bettered her 2 minutes, 44 seconds 800-meter dash personal record by 18 seconds since her freshman year and is ranked sixth in the SUNYAC.

Recny has been running fast times with ECAC qualifying marks in the 3K with a 10:33 time and a 17:38 mark in the 5K. Freshman Mahalia Ewers has ran an ECAC qualifying time for the 400 with her 1:22 in the 500m. All look to make a splash this weekend.

One area of difficulty for the Cardinal women will be missing out on points in the distance events. Toni Wiszowaty and Allison Busby, the top two Cardinal runners at the NCAA Cross Country Championships this past fall, will be missing the SUNYAC Championships.

"We won't have Toni or Allison who got us 25 points last year because of non-athletic/personal reasons," Lynch said.

On the men's side, freshman Mike Heymann continues to improve and lead the Cardinals in the distances and senior Jeff Dobson in the sprints. Heymann's 5K times have improved to 14:56, which may be the fastest 5K time ever by a Cardinal freshman, Lynch said.
