If fans attended the men's hockey SUNYAC semifinal Saturday night looking for a repeat of last week's Potsdam upset over Plattsburgh, they came to the wrong place.
The No. 3-ranked Cardinals scored early and often, defeating the Bears 6-0 and reserving their spot for a home-ice championship match-up against arch-nemesis Oswego, who beat Fredonia 4-1 tonight.
"We came out with great emotion, and great goaltending," PSUC Head Coach Bob Emery said. "(Hince) stayed in the game mentally and made some big saves at the end."
Freshman Dylan Clarke opened the scoring with a power-play goal 3:58 seconds into the first period, redirecting a shot from sophomore Ward Smith. Sophomore Andrew Willock added to the lead less than two minutes later.
Sophomore Phil Farrow scored on a wrap-around during a PSUC power-play in the last minutes of the period, giving the Cards a 3-0 lead.
PSUC went up 4-0 when Freshman Kyle VanderMale snuck behind Potsdam defenders and scored on a breakaway, thanks to a long feed from sophomore Joey Wilson.
Junior Nick Rolls ended the scoring in the second when junior Riley Hill and freshman Ryan Corry set him up at the top of the face-off circle.
PSUC started the third period down two skaters, but managed to kill the penalty. The Cards spent eight more minutes in the box during the period, but freshman goaltender Bryan Hince continued his stellar evening and held the Bears scoreless.
Bears' goaltender Rob Barnhardt also made a surplus of big saves, but was simply outmatched against the Cards' high-powered offense.
Rolls tallied a goal with seven seconds remaining in the game to end the scoring.
PSUC out-shot the Bears 34-26.
Emery said their goal is still to win the SUNYAC, but added that it is a bonus that the Cards have qualified for the NCAA tournament.
"It's a good feeling,' Emery said. "Enjoy this win and get back to work on Monday
