Colin Read will return to teaching in 2009, according to a news release from PSUC.
The announcement of Read's resignation was not expected - at least in public circles. He will leave behind a rapidly growing program that accounts for around one-sixth of PSUC's students.
Read could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon, but issues a statement in the school's news release.
"The success of SUNY Plattsburgh and the School of Business and Economics over the past few years has been remarkable," Read said in the statement. "I am confident I have accomplished all I set out to do, and more."
It is unclear why the dean will be stepping down or what teaching work he will take on. He will, however, be "pursuing new projects including coordination of the first annual Cross Border Supply Chain Management Conference, tentatively scheduled for April 2009," according to the release.
Under his tenure, SBE added 24 new full-time faculty and two new majors and doubled the number of participants in internship programs, outgoing Provost Robert Golden points out in an e-mail to the campus community. He also was the architect of efforts that have established an articulation agreement between PSUC and Concordia University in Montreal.
"I have worked closely with Colin for three years and know that he has been a significant factor in the progress the college has made," Golden said in a statement. "I appreciate his efforts and wish him the best in the future."
Read will likely take a deep cut to his $141,241 per year salary. He is currently the fifth biggest earner on campus, topped only by two vice presidents, Golden and President John Ettling.
Before coming to Plattsburgh after serving as dean of the business school at Central Connecticut State. Prior to that, he served for 15 years as associate dean at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
He holds a master of accountancy degree in taxation from the University of Tulsa, a master of business administration from the University of Alaska, a juris doctorate degree from the School of Law at the University of Connecticut, and master's and doctorate degrees in economics from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario.
He earned his undergraduate degree in physics and economics from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.
