Winter in Plattsburgh begins every year just toward the end of October.

The long, cold, hard winter can be unbearable at times, but it can also be surprisingly amusing.

Many students at Plattsburgh State came here solely for the Adirondack winter, and for the fact that their college is in the heart of New York's ski country.

However, some students unknowingly came to a school where the winter stretches for most of the school year.

Here are some ways to survive the Plattsburgh winter:

Go outside

There are many things that may scare students about the winter here, but it is important to realize that there are a lot of opportunities to have fun, even though you may think you are hopelessly trapped inside.

Make the best of the cold and hop on a nearby ski lift.

A huge number of ski resorts populate the surrounding area.

Whiteface, Jay Peak, Smuggler's Notch and Beartown Ski areas are all within a relatively short distance from PSUC.

Even if you aren't one to tackle a mountain, enjoying the beauty of the snow can be rewarding.

PSUC freshman Danielle Morales enjoys going out with her family and trotting around, especially on snowy days.

"Snowshoes are great," Morales said. "Even with a foot of snow on the ground, we're able to cover a surprising amount of land."

Stay in shape

Many people find it difficult to stay in shape during the winter months, when working out outside is almost impossible, and sometimes dangerous.

Other students find it quite easy to stay in shape, with just a little bit of dedication.Students utilize the gym in Memorial Hall in order to get around the cold, while still staying in shape and working out regularly.

"I cannot run in the cold for the life of me, but I manage to go for a jog on the treadmill pretty much every day," junior Christopher Brown said. "I like to work out, but the winter is the most dangerous time for my physique."
