The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team ended off the regular season in uncharacteristic fashion Friday night, losing 4-2 to the now 9-12-4 Potsdam Bears.
The Cardinals, who beat the Bears 11-1 earlier in the season, could not get things done against a Potsdam team looking to improve their playoff seeding.
Junior Mike Thompson started the scoring off for the Cardinals midway through the first period.
Potsdam's Luke Beck tied the game up early in the second, but PSUC sophomore Joey Wilson had an answer, scoring just over two minutes later. Wilson's score would be the Cards' last of the night.
Potsdam's Greg Lee capitalized on the power play with a goal in the third period, followed by a Colin Maclennan score less than two minutes later to give the Bears the lead.
A Fraser Smith empty net goal for Potsdam ended the game with just over a minute remaining.
The Cardinals out-shot Potsdam 37-28 and had two more power plays than the Bears.
With the win, Potsdam jumped Cortland in the standings for the fourth spot and now waits to see if Oswego can beat the Red Dragons to solidify the seeds.
PSUC, however, will go into the week with their second loss in four games, both to teams in the top four in the SUNYAC - team's the Cards' will likely meet again in the playoffs.
The quarterfinals for the SUNYAC tournament begin Tuesday, where the third and sixth seed will meet. The third and fourth seed will also face-off.
The lowest remaining seed will take on the top-seeded Cardinals at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena Saturday.
The seeds will be determined tomorrow following the Oswego/Cortland game.
