The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team finished strong, but not strong enough as New Paltz defeated the Lady Cardinals 62-48 Friday night at Memorial Hall.

Freshman Katie Simpson shot 3-4 from beyond the arc and helped lead a comeback in the final minutes of the second half against the Hawks.

New Paltz (11-3, 17-6) was ahead by 11 points with about a minute remaining and that lead fell apart after Simpson made two 3-pointers within the minute. The Hawks put the game away with free throws. PSUC (5-16, 3-10 SUNYAC) did not have enough time to make the comeback they were hoping for.

Simpson ended with a game high 13 points.

On defense, the Lady Cardinals stole the ball 13 times and made New Paltz work hard for their victory. Their pressure led to 30 New Paltz turnovers but their offense couldn't finish plays. PSUC led New Paltz in blocked shots, 7-3.

PSUC made 26 percent of their field goals as their shooting slump continued.

Sophomore Casey Clark finished with game high 14 rebounds, and also added eight points.

Junior Vanessa Arthurton finished solid with 10 rebounds, 10 points and six steals.

The Hawks bench proved to be the difference in the game, scoring 32 combined points.

The Lady Cardinals play at home against Oneonta Saturday at 2 p.m. - it will be their final home game.
