The search for a new provost is on as the committee narrows it down to 12 candidates.

Plattsburgh State President John Ettling appointed a 22-member search committee of respected faculty, valued representatives and committed campus constituencies to help select Robert Golden's replacement.

"It's a difficult task to find a new provost, especially one to replace Dr. Golden," Ettling said. "He has a type of level headedness that never deserts him, and he has the ability to balance the larger picture while mastering the details." Ettling continued to describe Golden as a widely respected man because of his quiet and steady leadership skills as a provost.

Thomas Moran, director of the college's Institute for Ethics and Public Life, is heading the appointed search committee. Moran was chosen to lead the committee because of his experience as the college's provost from 1989 to 1998.

Moran and the committee have submitted advertisements that describe the position and they've also employed a search firm to help acquire prospective candidates from around the country. Over 80 people have applied for the position.

The committee is looking for a trustworthy and compassionate person with a doctorate, broad administrative experience, a record of successful leadership and a wide understanding of public life and teaching.

"We've narrowed it down to 12 candidates, and we hope to have the selection down to 3 or 4 by the end of February," Moran said.

The committee also believes the next provost should have good judgment and an enthusiastic vision of the college's future.

The next provost has a lot of work ahead and big shoes to fill, but Golden said he is hoping to help him or her succeed.

"I don't want to get in the way," Golden said, "But when the committee names someone, I'll work closely with the new provost, for a short while, to help ease the transition."

Golden's last day as provost at PSUC will be June 30. The committee plans to select the next provost by early April and have him or her actively serving by mid-summer.

"Once the committee has made a decision, we will make a recommendation to the president," Moran said.

President Ettling said the next provost should have a combination of skill, aptitude and high morale.

"Golden has done an outstandingly fine job, and I hope the committee can find someone with the same sort of integrity," Ettling said.

A provost's job description is to evaluate faculty, organize academic affairs and delegate almost 60 percent of the university's budget. The typical salary range is $150,000 to $175,000, but it may also vary based upon experience and credentials.

PSUC Provost Robert Golden is resigning from his position to teach English literature at Adirondack Community College, a campus branch in Queensbury.

"It's been very interesting, demanding and certainly fun at SUNY Plattsburgh," Golden said, "But I am looking forward to teaching and helping ACC reach a positive direction and future."
