A senior television video production major at Plattsburgh State, Carroll said she has always dreamed of working on a movie set, and when the opportunity presented itself in the independent film, "Frozen River," she couldn't pass it up - even when it meant dropping out of school.
"I told myself, 'I'm going to take this experience and make a promise that I will return to school and I will get my degree, but right now this what I have to do'," Carroll said.
The drama, filmed locally in Beekmantown and Plattsburgh in late February to March 2007, was recently presented the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival at Park City, Utah. The award, presented to writer and producer Courtney Hunt by Academy Award-winning writer-director Quentin Tarintino whose own film, "Reservoir Dogs," appeared in the festival in 1992, was the highest honor the film could receive.
After being purchased by Sony Pictures Classic for under $1 million, the movie will be going on a 25-state tour starting in New York City.
Carroll, who began working behind the scenes as an office production assistant, was given the opportunity to work on the set as locations manager when the position needed to be filled.
As locations manager Carroll had to be the first on set and last to leave each day, and it was at this point she decided to take the semester off to work on the production.
After completing the filming of "Frozen River," Carroll went to New York to work on two other films, "Frost" and "Phoebe in Wonderland."
"Frost" was shown at the Slamdance Film Festival which also took place in Park City, while "Phoebe in Wonderland," starring Felicity Huffman, was shown at Sundance.
