Freshman Kate Fairfield and sophomore Steph Moberg tallied three points a piece and junior Danielle Blanchard added to her Division III-leading point total, as the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team defeated visiting Cortland 6-0 Saturday.
The win expanded the Lady Cardinals' lead in the ECAC-West to six points.
As she did Friday night, Blanchard scored early in the first period to bring her point total to 38 (21 G, 17 A) in 19 games.
Sophomore Amber Ellis, Fairfield, and Moberg followed suit, and the Lady Cardinals (19-2-0, 13-1-0 ECAC-West) headed to the locker room with a four goal lead.
The Lady Cards netted two more goals in the second period, courtesy of sophomore Laurie Bowler and Fairfield, to round out the scoring.
Freshman goalie Amanda Hoy earned her second career shutout, stopping 13 shots in the win.
"I have a lot of respect for the way they're playing," senior captain Julie Devereux said of the underclassmen. "It means a lot to the team. When they're motivated, we all are."
While the Lady Cards were on the penalty kill, the Red Dragons had the puck down low in a flurry that produced multiple shots in the third period.
Hoy had the answer for each one.
"She didn't see a lot of pucks but when she did she was confident and steady," Head Coach Kevin Houle said. "She made some really good saves on that PK. She's quick and covers the bottom of the net well for a small girl."
Fairfield finished the weekend with six points (4 G, 2 A), earning the number one star spot in each of the two games against the Red Dragons (3-15-3, 1-10-1 ECAC West).
Cortland junior goalie Melissa Stern made 31 saves in the loss.
The Lady Cards will next face No. 1 ranked Middlebury Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Stafford Ice Arena, in a rematch of the 2007 national championship game.
"We're looking for people to step up and play well, and I think we saw that from players like Kate and Amber," Houle said. "It gives us a third unit that can bury the puck and put pressure on the other team."
