The No. 2 ranked Plattsburgh State women's hockey team defeated Cortland Friday night 8-0 at the Stafford Ice Arena, increasing its lead in the ECAC-West division.
The Lady Cardinals (18-2, 12-1 ECAC-West) are first in the conference with 24 points. Elmira, who beat visiting Manhattanville 3-2 in a non-conference game Friday night, now trails by four points.
Division III leading scorer, junior Danielle Blanchard, opened the scoring 3:58 into the first period, netting a puck down low.
The Lady Cards tallied four more times in the period and Blanchard added another goal in the third to give her 37 points in 18 games on the season.
The Lady Cards held a shots-on-goal advantage of 54-3 against the Red Dragons (3-14-3, 1-9-1 ECAC-West) for the game.
"Part of the key to our success is our defense moving the puck," Head Coach Kevin Houle said. "We weren't pressured tonight."
The Lady Cards only took three penalties in the game, a far cry from the seven that they produced in each of the two games last weekend against Buffalo.
Freshman Megan Dijulio netted one goal to give her four points in her last three games.
Dijulio's line-mate, freshman Kate Fairfield, had two goals and one assist in the game to give her 13 points on the season.
"We're all way more comfortable now," Fairfield said of the freshmen. "We have no one to impress. As the season goes on you get to know everyone. We became a lot closer."
The Lady Cards will finish their weekend series against the Red Dragons Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Stafford Ice Arena.
Since the women's hockey program began at PSUC, the Lady Cards are a perfect 15-0-0 against Cortland, including Friday's game.
"You have to be ready every time you play the game," Houle said. "Take care of your own end. You never know what can happen."
