Stepping in to a new role, Head Coach John Lynch is looking to put a big emphasis on team unity, rather than just individual performance, this indoor track and field season at Plattsburgh State. He takes over for Brett Willmott, who will be coaching at the University of Vermont.
With an immense amount of talent on both the men's and women's teams, success will most certainly be in the Cardinals' future.
"We are making a commitment to team this year and trying to better our scores at SUNYAC and NCAAs," Lynch said. "Individual accolades, although still very important to us, come second."
He's got plenty of athletes to build his teams around. Both the women and the men are looking to improve on their respective sixth place finishes at the SUNYAC Championships last year.
For the Cardinal women, who are returning a very strong distance squad, hot off a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, look to rack up big points for their team. The teams open the season tomorrow with a meet tomorrow at St. Lawremce.
Senior standout Toni Wiszowaty is the top returning 5K runner in the country. She is joined by fellow All-American senior Alyssa Recny to control the distance events.
Recny said she is looking to use the indoor season as a chance to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships and also as a means to prepare for the outdoor track season.
"My individual goal since last season has been to break 18 minutes (in the 5K)," Recny said. "I would really like to make it to NCAAs for the 5K, but my ultimate goal is to get in some good quality workouts this winter and work on my speed for the 10K during outdoors."
On top of that, the women have some pretty solid depth amongst their roster.
"We have some good underclassmen on the sprint side in Mahalia Ewers and Kathryn O'Leary," Lynch said. "Leena Peters-Uitto is our best jumper/multi event athlete and Shannon Young is our best thrower."
The men have a young team and look to score big all across the board.
