Plattsburgh State junior Shawn Dennis eludes St. Scholastica sophomore defenseman Rob Rodgers during the Cardinal Classic championship game at the Stafford Ice Arena on Jan. 5. The Cardinals won 3-2.

Sophomore Tom Breslin scored the go-ahead goal a little over halfway through the third period and No. 3 ranked Plattsburgh State held on to beat St. Scholastica 3-2 at the Stafford Ice Arena in the championship game of the Cardinal Classic.

Plattsburgh State - which defeated Tufts 8-2 last night in the opening round - improves to 14-2-0 while the Saints drop to 6-7-2.

Freshman Dylan Clarke opened up the scoring with his eleventh goal of the season a little over eight minutes into the first stanza. Freshman Eric Satim and sophomore Ward Smith assisted on the play. The Saints responded less than three minutes later as sophomore Neil Sauter scored his first goal of the season on an assist from junior Joey Hughes.

Both teams traded goals in the second period, and Breslin's third goal of the season goal enabled the Cardinals to take home the tournament title for the third year in a row.

PSUC freshman goalie Bryan Hince (11-2-0) made 31 saves and allowed two goals to earn his 11th win of the season. Saints junior goalie Steve Bounds (3-3-1) made 22 saves, but allowed three goals to take the loss.
