It took the No. 3-ranked Plattsburgh State men's hockey team almost 45 minutes to gain a lead that they would be able to hang onto in Brockport Friday night. After out-shooting their opponents by a 46-21 margin, the Cardinals come away with a 4-2 win over the Golden Eagles.
Senior Nick Rolls started off the scoring for the Cardinals (20-3, 13-1 SUNYAC) 9:32 into the opening stanza, but PSUC would surrender a goal a little more than three minutes later to Brockport's Sean O'Malley.
With less than two minutes remaining in the period, junior Riley Hill tallied a score to give the Cards a 2-1 lead going into the locker room.
The Golden Eagles (6-14-3, 3-9-2 SUNYAC) would again have an answer. Brockport's Gordon Pritchard took advantage of a power play with a goal a little over five minutes into the second period.
The Cardinals failed to score on Brockport goaltender Todd Sheridan in the period despite shooting 26 pucks on net. Sheridan played a stellar game in net against a relentless Cardinal offense, making 42 saves on the night. Sheridan gave the team a chance with a 2-2 score at the second intermission.
Freshman Ryan Corry broke the tie with a power-play goal 4:06 into the third period, and Hill finished the scoring off with his second of the night.
Sheridan faced only three shots in the final period, but managed to save just one.
The Cardinals continue the weekend road-trip Saturday night when they face off against host Geneseo at 7 p.m.
