Despite being without their top two scorers and No. 1 goaltender, the Plattsburgh State women's hockey team was able to take two games from Chatham last weekend, one week after suffering their first loss in 35 games.

Junior Danielle Blanchard, sophomore Stephanie Moberg and junior goaltender Danielle Beattie did not play in the games against Chatham. Senior Elise Campbell was also out for the weekend.

Saturday's game featured contributions from varied sources. Freshmen Kate Fairfield and Brittany Meade notched their first goals of the year, tallying two and one respectively.

"It was about time," Fairfield said of scoring her first goals.

"We (freshmen) felt like we all had to step up. (The older players) told us we were getting the opportunity to play and we should take advantage."

Freshmen Megan DiJulio and Steph Moon accounted for two and three points respectively.

Sophomore Laurie Bowler also contributed two goals in the 8-0 victory.

The Lady Cards held a shots-on-goal advantage of 52 to nine.

Freshman goalie Mandy Mackrell earned her second shutout in as many games played this season.

Sunday's match-up featured less scoring, but continued dominance in shots-on-goal for the Lady Cards. Chatham sophomore goalie Sam Hunt made 63 saves on 66 shots, but the Lady Cards out-shot Chatham 66-10 and earned a 3-0 victory.

Freshman goalie Amanda Hoy earned the shutout in the first start of her collegiate career.

"I really wanted to show coach that I could step up and play," Hoy said. "I was focused. It feels good to help the team."

Sophomore Kayla McDougall scored her first goal of the season in the game.

Junior assistant captain Lindsay Brown had two assists in the game, finishing the weekend with five points.

"We didn't light the world on fire, but that's okay," Head Coach Kevin Houle said. "We took care of business and got two wins and came out none the worse for wear. I would like to see us move the puck better and take advantage of our scoring opportunities."
