Before the start of the 2007-08 Cardinal hockey season, men's Head Coach Bob Emery said he was looking for consistency at the goaltending position. So far, his wishes have been granted.
Days before the annual Red-White scrimmage in October, Emery pointed out that the two biggest weaknesses from last year that he hoped to fix this year were getting the big save and getting the timely goal.
Last weekend's thrilling 5-4 overtime victory over Geneseo proved that the Cardinals seem to be headed in the right direction.
The Cards' recent success can be greatly attributed to a big off-season.
In the off-season, Emery recruited two freshmen goalies to join junior returner Chris Molinaro in PSUC's goaltending corps.
Bryan Hince, a Kapuskasing, Ontario native, was a first-team All-Star for his entire three years playing in Juniors. Hince has taken the bulk of the starts so far this year (ten), and is making an immediate impact at the goaltending position.
Hince attributes his success to his hard work, and more importantly the hard work of the players surrounding him.
"They play with a lot of confidence in front of me, especially with them
getting so many goals this year," Hince said. "They have definitely helped boost my confidence."
Emery's mission of giving everyone an equal opportunity to play has had an effect on the team's individual work ethic.
"No player was guaranteed any playing time coming here," Hince said. "My plan was just to work hard and see what came out of it."
A .900 win percentage is good enough to put Hince at the top of the SUNYAC in that category.
In Hince's 606 minutes and 12 seconds of playing time, he has recorded 220 saves and 19 goals-against, for a .921 save-percentage (third in SUNYAC). Hince maintains a 9-1-0 record in those ten games, and has allowed an average of 1.88 goals-against per game. He holds the lead in goals-against average among all of the SUNYAC net-minders.
