Men's hockey suffers first conference loss of season, 13-game home win streak snapped
After cruising past Buffalo State Friday night, the No. 3-ranked Plattsburgh State men's hockey team suffered their first conference and home loss of the season Saturday, dropping a 3-1 decision to Fredonia at the Stafford Ice Arena.
The Blue Devils (12-7-3, 8-3-2 SUNYAC) opened up the scoring 1 minute and 32 seconds into the game on Bryan Goudy's seventh goal of the season. After scoring a goal in both the second and third periods, the Blue Devils finally gave up a goal to the Cardinals when sophomore Joey Wilson scored on a 6-on-4 power play with under two minutes to play.
It proved to be too little and too late and the Cardinals (19-3, 12-1 SUNYAC) 13-game home win streak was snapped as they wrapped up the last regular season home game.
The Cardinals still remain top in the SUNYAC standings with 24 points. Oswego trails behind in second with 21.
Freshman goaltender Bryan Hince picked up his third loss of the season, making 17 saves. Pat Street earned the win in the net for the Blue Devils, making 30 saves to pick up his tenth win.
On Friday, the Cardinals benefited from five different players scoring en route to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Bengals (10-9-3, 5-5-3 SUNYAC).
Women's hockey blankets Bengals in two-game sweep
The No. 2-ranked Plattsburgh State women's hockey team brought the brooms and the goose eggs to host Buffalo State over the weekend, sweeping and shutting out the Bengals over two games on Saturday and Sunday in ECAC-West play.
The two conference wins keep the Lady Cardinals (17-2-0, 11-1-0 ECAC-WEST) on top in the conference with 22 points. No. 7-ranked Elmira trails in second with 20.
Four goals by four different Lady Cardinals in the first period was all the team needed for the first win Friday night 4-0.
Junior Danielle Beattie made 17 saves to earn her fifth career shutout.
The Lady Cards managed another strong first period Saturday night with three power play goals. Junior Claire O'Connor notched two and sophomore Laurie Bowler added the other. Sophomore Stephanie Moberg picked up her tenth and eleventh scores in the second by way of special teams - one with the team shorthanded and the other on a power play opportunity.
Freshman Megan DiJulio rounded out the scoring with her eighth goal of the season in the 6-0 victory.
Beattie picked up her fourteenth win of the season and combined with freshmen goalies Amanda Hoy and Mandy Mackrell for eleven saves.
Men's basketball remain unbeaten in conference play
The No. 16-ranked Plattsburgh State men's basketball team picked up two more SUNYAC victories over the weekend to leave them as the only school team undefeated in conference play.
The Cardinal cagers defeated Oneonta on Friday and followed it with another win against New Paltz on Saturday, both road games. The Cardinals (17-2, 11-0 SUNYAC) have won nine straight road games this season, the team's best mark since the 1960s.
