Men's basketball win two in SUNYAC competition

The No. 25 ranked Plattsburgh State men's basketball game went 2-0 in road conference games against Fredonia on Friday and then Buffalo State Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals now stand at 10-2 overall and an unbeaten 4-0 in SUNYAC play.

On Friday, the Cardinals used a near perfect shooting performance from the field - 14 of 16 shots made - to outscore the Blue Devils 45-33 in the second half en route to a 74-65 victory at Steele Hall.

Senior Anthony Williams led the Cardinals with 22 points before fouling out late in the game. Fellow senior Antwane Miller added 17.

Brad Cooper netted a game-high 26 points for the Blue Devils (3-7, 1-2 SUNYAC). Kevin Saunders chipped in 16 points and seven boards.

The next day Williams moved into second on PSUC's all-time scoring list, pouring in a game-high 25 to lead the Cardinals past host Buffalo State 79-70 at the Sports Arena.

Williams passed 2007 Cardinal Sports Hall of Fame inductee Todd Wright for second-place for career points with 1,292, and now trails only Larry Parker, who had 1,560 points from 1975-78. Miller chipped in 14, and senior Travis Gorham netted 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Dion Mozelle led Buffalo State (4-6, 2-2 SUNYAC) with 18 points and a career-high 20 rebounds.

The Cardinals return home to Memorial Hall for the next two games this weekend against SUNYAC-foes SUNYIT (3-6, 0-3 SUNYAC) and Cortland (9-2, 3-0 SUNYAC).

Women's hockey breaks out the brooms in sweep of Utica

The No. 1 ranked Lady Cardinals outscored host and ECAC-West foe Utica 7-2 in two games and swept the Pioneers to improve to 13-1 and an unbeaten 8-0 in ECAC-West play.

The Cardinals started out 2008 with a shutout of the Pioneers on Saturday 3-0. Junior Shay Bywater scored two goals, the first at under four minutes into the game. Sophomore Laurie Bowler added an insurance goal at the end of the second period.

Junior goalie Danielle Beattie stopped all 18 shots she faced to pick up her ninth win of the season.

The Pioneers finally broke through against Beattie in the rematch the next day, when Andrea Maxon used a power play to tie the game at 1-1 on an assist from Jessica Leclerc.

The two teams traded goals early in the third period before Sophomore Stephanie Moberg put the Cardinals ahead with less than thirty seconds to spare in the game. Bywater and senior co-captain Julie Devereux were credited with assists.

Bowler scored an empty-net insurance goal just before time expired.

Beattie picked up her eleventh win of the season, credited with 18 saves.

The Pioneers fell to 7-6 and 3-2 in ECAC-West play.

The Lady Cardinals continue ECAC-West play this weekend when they host RIT (9-1, 5-1 ECAC-West) in games on Saturday and Sunday.

Women's basketball wins two, increases streak to three straight

The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team won two games this past weekend, making it three in a row and giving them five wins this season - one win shy of matching the amount they had all of last season.

The three game win streak is the longest the team has had in three seasons.

The Lady Cardinals two wins came against SUNYAC competition - defeating Fredonia Friday night 59-54 then coming out on top against Buffalo State 63-55 the next day.

Sophomore Casey Clark recorded team-highs of 15 points and 13 rebounds in a win against the Blue Devils (5-7, 0-4 SUNYAC) at Steele Hall. Junior Vanessa Arthurton added 10 points.

Arthurton topped that performance the next day when she scored a season-high 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Cardinals over the Bengals (5-8, 1-3 SUNYAC) at the Sports Arena. Clark netted 16 points and seven boards for the Cardinals and freshman Katie Simpson added nine points off the bench.

The Lady Cardinals return home this weekend to face two more SUNYAC opponents - SUNYIT (4-4, 1-2 SUNYAC) on Friday, and Cortland (8-1, 3-0) on Saturday.
