Plattsburgh State's Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity accepted responsibility Wednesday for the hazing charges brought against them following a Nov. 3 incident.
A statement of the charges showed violations of the alcohol policy, new member activities, hazing, Student Association legislation and civil or criminal law.
Sigma Tau Gamma was reported to have hazed new members of the fraternity, the report says, by having them swallow a nickel.
A new member was hospitalized as a result.
The fraternity was also reported to have violated the Plattsburgh State Risk Management Policy when they hosted an alcohol event and drinking games.
Underage students were also allowed to drink at the event.
By accepting responsibility, the fraternity will now see sanctions, Dean of Students Stephen Matthews said.
Matthews will work with and get input from Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Allison Swick-Duttine and the Inter Fraternity Council to come up with the sanctions.
"This is not hazing as we've seen it in the past," Matthews said.
He added that they plan to make this an opportunity to educate on how such actions are classified as hazing.
"We hope to bridge the gap so the entire Greek system has understanding," Matthews said.
Being a national fraternity, Sigma Tau Gamma's governing national body may give input for the upcoming sanctions.
Matthews said that while they may seek such input, the college does not have to use the suggestions in determining sanctions.
