The Lady Cardinals basketball team is looking to the future and forgetting the past after four consecutive losing seasons. The team is looking to do better than their previous season's 6-19 overall record, 6-13 in SUNYAC play.
One of the keys to their success will be return of seven players who gained valuable experience from last year.
"Last season we were young players," senior captain Jacee Sutton said. "The returners are all strong."
Starting at guards will be Sutton and sophomore Shoshana Harris. Sutton brings her experience and leadership and worked hard this offseason to prepare for the upcoming season.
Harris, second on the team with 38 steals last season, has a year of good experience under her and is ready to help lead the team.
"She can take over games but needs killer instinct," Cole said.
Junior captain Vanessa Arthurton will be starting as the third guard. She led the team last year in total field goals percentage (.425), points per game (8.6), rebounds per game (7.1) and led the team with 48 steals.
"She's a versatile player who stepped up her game tremendously," Cole said. "She is a tough match-up and the most athletic on the team."
Returning sophomore Casey Clark and freshman Taylor Amarando will be playing forward positions, rounding out the starting five.
Clark led the team in offensive rebounds with 75 and was second on the team in total rebounds, averaging 5.4 a game. She was second in field goal percentage at 42 percent.
"[Clark] dominates offensive boards," Cole said.
Amarando has already shown she can make an impact after posting a double-double - 12 points and 11 rebounds - in the Cardinals exhibition game against the University of Ottawa on Nov. 2
"She is probably our strongest post," Sutton said.
Amarando has worked hard and said she is excited about making the starting lineup. She said she is not nervous about her opponents and is ready for the season to begin.
