The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team is set to travel to Middlebury for the Middlebury Classic this weekend after defeating Oswego twice last weekend in its first road trip of this young season.
The Lady Cardinals extended their winning streak to 16 games dating back to last season and set NCAA history by tying Elmira for the longest women's hockey all-divisions unbeaten streak at 33 games. They outscored the Lakers 18-1 and held a shots-on-goal advantage of 99-26 in the two games.
Friday night's game featured continued success on special teams for the Lady Cards. Junior Danielle Blanchard and sophomore Stephanie Moberg each scored a short-handed goal. Sophomores Laurie Bowler and Amber Ellis each scored a power play goal in the game.
Junior Danielle Beattie was solid in net, stopping 12 shots to earn her third ECAC West division win of the season.
On Saturday, the Lady Cards picked it right back up, scoring four goals in the opening period and establishing the power early. Four power play goals and two short handed goals accounted four six of the nine goals scored in the 9-0 win.
Freshman Mandy Mackrell made her collegiate debut between the pipes in the game and recorded 13 saves to earn the shutout victory.
"It was a really good start," Mackrell said. "I was nervous but knew I could handle the pressure and do what I came here to do."
Blanchard and Moberg each scored twice in the game and finished the weekend having recorded seven points each.
"We went out and continued to work hard," Moberg said. "It was good to come away with two wins."
Lady Cards Assistant Coach Erin O'Brien took over the head coaching duties this weekend. Head Coach Kevin Houle was in Sweden, tending to his assistant coaching duties for the U.S. women's national team.
"When we get a power play the girls should be ready to go," O'Brien said. "They're taking advantage of the opportunity."
Despite suffering such lopsided losses, Lakers Head Coach Diane Dillon said she appreciates watching a team that "fires on all cylinders" like the Lady Cards did.
