It took more than three periods last night for the Plattsburgh State men's hockey team to come to a decision with St. John's, but an overtime goal put the Cards in tonight's championship game against Norwich.

The Cardinals defeated St. John's University (Minn.) 4-3 in the first round of the Primelink Great Northern Shootout tournament at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena, improving their overall record to 8-1-0. PSUC will play Norwich in the championship round tonight at 7 p.m.

The game will be a rematch of last year's Primelink championship game where Norwich edged the Cardinals 4-2.

Junior Shawn Dennis was credited with the game-winner against St. John's. Dennis was able to get a stick on the puck, which bounced off the boards in front of the net from a shot by Ward Smith. Junior Nick Rolls, freshman Dan Sliasis, and freshman Mike Schiavi also recorded goals for PSUC.

Freshman Bryan Hince made 23 saves in net for the Cards.

Jason Weigel, Tom Freeman, Clayton Rehm each tallied a goal for St. John's.

Norwich beat Middlebury 5-2 on Saturday to advance to the final game against the Cards. St. John's and Middlebury are currently facing off, in a game that started today at 4 p.m.

The clashing of two high-powered power-play units creates what should be an even match-up in tonight's championship game.

The Cadets' Rick Cleaver recorded a hat trick against Middlebury on Saturday, and should be factor in tonight's game. Norwich was 4-6 on the power-play, while Middlebury scored one power-play goal on six opportunities.

PSUC scored on just two of seven power-play chances against St. John's, though the Cards had plenty of opportunities.
