Back-to-back SUNYAC champions.
Won a school record 21 games and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament last year.
We're not talking about a Plattsburgh State hockey team.
We're talking about the men's basketball team, who has quietly established themselves as one of the most successful PSUC sports programs in the past few years.
The Cardinal cagers open their season this weekend at the SUNY-Old Westbury Panther Classic ranked as the 16th best Division III basketball team by D3Hoops.com.
The ranking is one of many accolades the Cards have racked up before the first tip-off of the season.
Basketball Times (formerly Street and Smith's) ranked the team 13th in the nation. The magazine named reigning SUNYAC player of the year Anthony Williams, a senior, as a preseason all-American selection.
The Sporting News called PSUC as "a possible breakthrough team," and named Williams to the preseason all-American second team, with fellow senior Travis Gorham earning an honorable mention.
Williams added to his long list of off-season awards when he was named a D3Hoops.com preseason all-American honorable mention this week.
"Certainly it's an honor to be recognized, but the great thing about sports that anybody can recognize you all you want - once you get on the floor you have to perform," Head Coach Tom Curle, who won SUNYAC coach of the year last season, said.
Last year's season ended at the hands of St. John Fisher in the second round of the NCAA tournament after the Cardinals advanced past Rochester in the first round on a buzzer-beating 30-foot 3-pointer by Williams.
The Cardinals are coming into this season confident, with their eyes not just on a third straight SUNYAC title, but a national title as well.
"We're hoping to go undefeated in the SUNYACs and win a national championship," senior forward Khylan Hunt said.
For the first time in his career, Curle will open the season with a starting five consisting entirely of seniors. Starters in nearly all games last year, Williams, Gorham and Hunt will be joined by Ricky Rider and Antwane Miller. While Miller and Rider weren't full-time starters last season, both received significant playing time. Despite only one start last season, Miller averaged 26 minutes a game, good for fourth most on the team. Rider averaged 16 minutes per game and started 18 of them.
