It may not have ended exactly the way they both wanted it to, but the Plattsburgh State men and women's soccer teams both had tremendous seasons this year.

Both teams had winning records and managed to qualify in the SUNYAC tournament at the end of the season.

The men went 7-2-2 in their conference, placing second, and had an overall 14-2-4 record. Although they put up an impressive record, it did not get them a bid for the NCAA tournament.

They also made their way up to the SUNYAC finals at the end of the season against Fredonia as both teams went scoreless through the entire game and two overtimes. The game was then judged by a shootout, which the Cards lost 4-2.

"Despite what happened last week it was a great year," Head Coach Chris Waterbury said. "We had our goals quite high but just didn't quite get it."

The Cardinals had solid offense all season long, which also went along with exceptional defense and goaltending. The men only gave up four goals the entire year and junior goalkeeper John San Filippo led the SUNYAC with a .20 goals against average, .927 save percentage and 16 shutouts. He was also named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament team along with freshman defender Bart Misiak and sophomore John LoGuirato.

The Cards came close to winning the SUNYAC championship and still said they believe they were qualifiers for a bid to the NCAA tournament.

This means the team will have to do their best next season to make sure they do it.

"We obviously have a few good players returning and our future is looking very bright," Waterbury said. "You never want the season to end. We would all love to start tomorrow."

They will have to do it without seniors J.P. Moakler, Justen Legge, and Dave Widenmaier, who graduate at the end of the school year.

"Overall we did really well, it just wasn't the outcome we would have liked," Legge said. "Next year they're going to do really well, they'll definitely be up there."
