What do you get when energy, vibrancy, commitment and knowledge are all together in one person?

According to Greg Stone, dean of students and head coach of the women's hockey team at Castleton State, you get Chantalle Rye.

Rye, who graduated from Plattsburgh State and played for the women's hockey team, recently got a job as the assistant coach for the Castleton State women's ice hockey team.

"She came in here a total stranger and in a few days she was well connected," Stone said. "She has a great work ethic, and makes great decisions. We were real excited to get her."

Born in Ontario, Canada, she played hockey for PSUC from 2002-2006, making the All-ECAC team three times. During that span, she skated on the defensive end in 101 games, tallying 82 points on 24 goals and 58 assists.

Aside from her brilliance inside the hockey rink, she has great people skills, Stone said.

"We wanted a woman who could connect with the players and she did right away," he said. "She brings exceptional quality coaching to our program and makes great decisions without any help from me."

Her main duties are recruiting, system planning and staying in contact with the athletes. She has to make sure her players stay well prepared for games and in the classroom.

Since she was born in Canada, she has a lot of ties to players up north which helps in the recruiting process.

So how did she land the job?

"I knew players on their (Castleton St.) team," Rye said. "One day I got an e-mail saying there was an opening for that position, so I applied and got it."

Erin O'Brien, women's hockey assistant coach at PSUC, said Rye called her before her interview looking for a little advice. O'Brien played two years with Rye, and has been a coach the last three for the Cardinals.

"A few days before she had her interview she called me and asked me what to expect," O'Brien said. "I told her to be professional and to be honest."
