The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team overcame 23 penalty minutes in a 5-3 winning effort over Norwich tonight at the Stafford Ice Arena, claiming the Primelink Great Northern Shootout championship and improving their record to 9-1.
"We did a good job tonight playing Cardinal Hockey," Head Coach Bob Emery said.
The Cards carried a one-goal lead going into the first intermission despite a surplus of penalties, including a five-minute major and misconduct on sophomore Joey Wilson after a hit-from-behind call.
"We were able to just keep going and stick to our game plan," team captain Nick Rolls, who won tournament MVP, said.
PSUC regained the lead in the second period after a Norwich goal in the opening minutes of the stanza. Norwich scored again in the third to tie the game at three, but PSUC scored twice more to bring the game to a close.
"If we stick to coach Emery's game-plan, then we are one of the best teams in the country," Rolls added.
The Cardinals' win tonight capped off a solid 2-0 effort for the weekend - a good follow-up returning from the team's only loss of the season at Elmira last weekend.
Freshman Dan Sliasis, junior Riley Hill, Rolls, freshman Eric Satim and sophomore Andrew Willock recorded goals for the Cards.
"A lot of people were down on us, saying we were over-ranked," Rolls said. "I think we kind of shut some people up, and if not we're just going to keep doing what we're doing the rest of the year."
