Should Sodexho's contract be renewed after it expires in June 2008?

Same food every day isn't doing Sodexho any good

By MiKe O'Keefe
Staff Writer

Sodexho has been a sound provider of chicken nuggets and Philly cheese steaks for the past two years of my life here at Plattsburgh State.

Everyday I would either walk all the way to Clinton from my dorm or across campus to the Sundowner and try to get my daily fix.

I would usually walk out of one of those two dining halls feeling satisfied, often even overstuffed.

The overstuffed stomachs were solely my problem, but I also found another crisis related to the food provided on campus.

I began to realize that I was eating the same thing over and over again, to the point where I felt as though I was on a fixed schedule.

Every Thursday: chicken nuggets at Clinton and Algonquin.

Every Tuesday night: buffalo chicken patties.

I don't mean to complain, and I sure didn't for the past two years of scarfing down, but I found myself getting sick of the food, even though there seemed to be quite the variety of options between the three main dining halls on campus.

But let's be honest, Algonquin is just a tiny Clinton Dining Hall, and once the menu is similar at both places on the same day, it is hard to find the food appealing.

I love spaghetti, cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets (especially chicken nuggets), but I do not like Sodexho's spaghetti, cheeseburgers, and chicken nuggets.

I guess I'm just sick of it.

We've had the same campus food service for the last 30 years, so why not change it up now?

Sodexho's contract to cater our campus expires at the end of the 2007-08 academic year, and I think we need to get a different company to handle it.

The fact of the matter is, Sodexho employs a lot of people, not only on our campus, but all across North America as well. The company's enormous budget is supported in part by SUNY campuses, as well as countless other places like hospitals and hotels.

This is a difficult responsibility to undertake for any company: providing moody college kids with food they'll enjoy regularly.
