The Plattsburgh State men's rugby club was directed Monday to stop all activities, with the exception of practice and games, pending the results of an investigation into a hazing incident that allegedly took place Saturday night at an off-campus location.
Vice President for Student Affairs William Laundry was informed of the allegations Monday by University Police assistant chief Jerry Lottie.
The case has now been turned over to the City of Plattsburgh Police Department.
Laundry said it is the only time he can remember that a Student Association club has been investigated for hazing.
"It does not seem as if this is a consistent or routine kind-of-thing - it was an incident," he said.
Depending on investigation results or the severity of the actions the team could be charged with a sanction, lose SA funding or no longer be recognized as a club, SA President Kim Garrison said.
"You don't know what went on and that determines what will happen," she said.
Physical Education and Recreation Sports Coordinator Leith Bardon said she talked to the athletes and told them to cooperate with the investigation. She said she is not involved in the investigation and was only notified of the allegations.
"If you want to get attention on campus do something that involves, or looks like it involves, hazing," Laundry said.
He doesn't know how long the investigation will take but said, "I don't want this to drag on for six months."
By press time, club captain Bryan Kuenzel had not returned six phone messages.
