After being swept by Skidmore last week, the Plattsburgh State women's tennis team began focusing on the SUNYAC championships that begin today.
The loss ended the Cardinals' regular season with a 3-8 record overall and 3-3 SUNYAC record.
Skidmore improved their undefeated record to 4-0 after shutting out PSUC 9-0.
"Everyone worked hard and showed great effort," sophomore Tiarra Garrow said.
Garrow's opponent Rachel Loeb was a quarterfinalist in the ITA Regionals three weeks ago.
"She was a really great player," Garrow said.
"During her match she was running all over the court and had to hit the ball back just as hard to keep pace," head coach Mark Stata said.
She had some good shots and made sure that she made Loeb work for every point.
"Tiarra was their toughest match," Stata said.
Garrow said despite the loss the team is keeping their heads up and staying positive.
They know that they are ready for the SUNYAC Championships.
"We knew it would be a tough match, but we use it to get ready for the SUNYAC," Garrow said.
The SUNYAC Championships begin today at 4 p.m. in Syracuse and continue through Saturday and Sunday. The coaches have a meeting at 2 p.m. to decide where players will be ranked and set up the schedule for the championships.
After the match against New Paltz, Stata said, "the top two singles matches were well played and these close matches will help our players in the seedings meeting for the SUNYAC Championships."
New Paltz is the defending SUNYAC winner and is bringing back the 2006 first, second and sixth singles champs.
Geneseo, who did not play PSUC, has an undefeated record at 5-0 in the SUNYAC and were the only SUNYAC team to defeat New Paltz.
PSUC ranks sixth in the SUNYAC and Stata said he hopes his players get a good seed after close matches with teams they played well against.
Garrow returns to SUNYAC Championship play after winning the SUNYAC title at No. 3 singles last year as a freshman.
"I feel like I'm ready," Garrow said. "At practice I will serve a couple buckets of balls to work on my serve."
She said she will also make sure that her legs get plenty of rest.
The team's season ending schedule against the non-confrence teams has been good practice for the championships.
Coach Stata said he does not believe in over-practicing and wants his players to be refreshed for this weekend.
They will work on conditioning and improve their volleying, and he will work with each individual player on their strengths and weaknesses.
Stata said he wants to get everyone to feel good about tennis and about their shot because confidence is a key when it comes to winning.
"Tennis is a mental game," Stata said.
Despite the losses against the non-SUNYAC teams, Stata said the players know they have put good effort into their game and will continue to improve.
