Current sports information assistant director and former team MVP for the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team was named the top assistant coach for a one-year interim basis.

The 2007-08 Plattsburgh State women's basketball team looks to a familiar face on the sideline this season, as current assistant sports information director and former PSUC team MVP Kerry Chapin takes the reigns as the women's top assistant coach.

Chapin has been hired on a one-year interim basis, though future arrangements are not out of the equation. She will still be working with her current sports information job, along with the new assistant position. Director of Athletics, Bruce Delventhal, explained that they have "combined the two jobs together" for Chapin.

"I always refer to Kerry as a 'hoop-head', because she shows such a strong love for the game," Delventhal said, referring to her passionate attitude in her experiences with the PSUC basketball program.

Chapin will work under Cheryl Cole, who is going into her 11th year as head coach for the Cardinals. In Cole's first year as head coach, Chapin was the team's senior point guard. She was the team MVP that season, and was picked for the all-State University of New York Athletic Conference squad.

Before coming to play at PSUC, she played ball at Oneonta, which Cole said contributed to her well-rounded "knowledge and experience in the conference."

Delventhal had many positive things to say about the move.

"Kerry brings a lot of positive energy and enthusiasm to the team," he said. "I think Cheryl is very happy to have someone like Kerry around, I know I am."

"We're really excited to have her," Cole quickly confirmed. "The team enjoys working with her." Cole added that Chapin's involvement with the team last year provided her with a "good understanding of the team and where we want to go."

Chapin said she is very excited about the opportunity, hoping to connect with the players on a personal level and help them work on their own game.

"I'm looking to help out in building team chemistry, as well as focusing on working with the players individually," Chapin said.

Cole said Chapin's current job in sports information, as well as her former job as an admissions advisor gives a good connection with the school and the program.
