NOTE: An earlier version of this story said the student was released Wednesday, rather than Tuesday.

A Mason Hall resident who was detained by federal agents in Rochester over the Columbus Day weekend and held in the Ontario County Jail was released Tuesday, jail officials confirmed Wednesday evening.
The jail said the student posted bond and was released yesterday.
The student had planned a trip to Ohio over the weekend, and when she didn't return, dorm staff became worried and reported her absence, according to UP assistant chief Jerry Lottie. University Police then set about locating the student, both to determine her whereabouts and to make sure she was safe.
Lottie said he spent hours on the phone trying to track down the student, and eventually found out she had been detained on an immigrations violation, but that he could not get specific answers from Homeland Security. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement may also be involved in the case. Lottie was also in regular contact with the student's father to receive updates on her status.
In cases like this, Lottie said, detainees can usually post a bail or bond and be released prior to an administrative hearing.
The student's roommate said she would be returning to Plattsburgh on Sunday, but could not provide further details.
