Although playoff hopes are far-reaching, the Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team is not giving up just yet.
Last weekend, at the Hartwick Tournament, the Lady Cardinals went 3-1, defeating Utica College twice and Alfred University once. The lone loss came at the hands of Baruch College.
All three of the wins in the tournament were the result of domination by the Lady Cards in straight games. Baruch beat the Lady Cards by a combined 11 points in three straight games.
Senior captain Lindsey Wilfore was named all-tournament at Hartwick for her excellent play during the tournament.
"It was a great honor for me personally," she said. "But we played really well as a team."
On Tuesday, the Lady Cards defeated St. Michael's in come-from-behind fashion, 3-2.
After winning the first game, the Lady Cards dropped two in a row, scoring a combined 28 points in those games. They then went on to win the next two and take the match. The victory helped the Lady Cards amend the tough loss to the Purple Knights on Sept. 11, a match they dropped 3-0.
"Being down two matches, we could have given up, but we didn't," Head Coach Dena O'Connell said of the comeback. "That takes more focus and determination than anything.
The Lady Cards have now won five of their last six matches, a dramatic turnaround from early-season inconsistency that plagued the team.
Wilfore said she feels that the momentum can only do the team good as the season goes on.
"It's a huge confidence booster for us," Wilfore said of the win against St. Michael's. "It's really going to help us coming into this weekend."
This weekend marks the start of the Best Western-Ground Round Cardinal Classic, beginning this afternoon in the Memorial Hall gym.
The Lady Cards will play Buffalo State in their first match at 2:30 p.m. and Nazareth College in their second match at 6:30 p.m. They will then take on Cazenovia College at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning before re-pooling occurs tomorrow afternoon to determine the championship matches.
